Can I update from Parallels Desktop 6 directly to Parallels Desktop 9, or do I need to step through 1 or more "intermediate" updates?

You can buy an upgrade to Parallels Desktop 9 from versions 7/8 but not from any earlier versions and also like to inform you Parallels Desktop 9 upgrade is not sold on Parallels website anymore. You can only purchase Parallels Desktop 12 on the official site.

So if I were already at 7/8 I could move up to 9 for the "upgrade" price, but coming from 6 I will have the pay the full retail for a new license, correct?

But other than that, there's no technical reason why I would have to bump-up through 7/8, I can do it all in one go?

Hi, yes you're right, you need a full Parallels Desktop license.
