3120: Cannot upgrade new XP VM to Vista

How do you boot from the Vista DVD? Are you booting from within Parallels? Sorry, I don't understand how to do this. Thanks for the help.

Parallels team working on ACPI upgrade fix...

Got word from them today, they are working on the problem and should have a fix soon.
 
This does not work. When I boot from the Vista Ultimate DVD it gives me the same ACPI incompatibility message and reports that Windows failed to load. I do not understand how you got past that.
 
Is it possible to install Vista as an upgrade via downloaded files purchased from Microsoft? I've read that only the top version of Vista can be installed as an upgrade. Doesn't make sense to me.

I bought Home Premium (and THEN I found out about the educational discount! :mad:!! )
 
Only upgrades are available for purchase & download on Microsoft's website. I suppose I could burn it to a DVD, but isn't making a bootable Windows DVD pretty complicated?
 
ACPI Upgrade Workaround...

Guys, I have a simple way to upgrade XP to Vista. Parallels is working on the fix, but until then here is all you need to do:

1) Make sure you are using build 3150
2) Set your Parallels OS to Vista
3) Boot up to your XP SP2 OS
4) From a CMD prompt, rename C:\Windows\System32\hal.dll to hal_std.dll
5) From a CMD prompt, copy C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\halacpi.dll to C:\Windows\System32\hal.dll
6) Uninstall Parallels Tools
7) Reboot (XP may ask you to activate again - no need if you are upgrading to Vista)
8) Let changes detect and complete (but cancel Found New Hardware), Reboot (again)
8) Run Vista Setup/Upgrade Program
9) Install Parallels Tools after Vista Upgrade is complete
10) Kick-back and enjoy the wanna-be Mac OS called "Vista"

Hmm... got through step 6, rebooted XP, and now it won't start. I keep getting that blue Stop screen and haven't been able to start up using any available modes (safe mode, command prompt, etc). Help.
 
Same here. Blue Screen of death on boot.
Needless to say. Glad didn't do that in an active machine that I needed.
Always a backup.

OUCH!!!

I always have a copy of my VM.
I was able to install in a new VM but I really want to upgrade the VM I have.
I don't want to re-install all apps.
 
Sorry guys, it works fine for me each time. I've tried 4 totally different XP images and so far perfect each time. Can you list the exact BSoD error you get?
 
tech_head, teg203 - just to confirm, you both are running 3150, had set the Parallels OS property from XP to Vista, and were using XP SP2?
