3188 Vista Upgrade-"Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next...

Hi all,

I Using build 3188 with maximum amount of memory assigned (1900 or 19000, whatever it is) AND the max video memory assigned, with a 90 GB expanding "hard drive". I am trying to upgrade my existing Windows XP guest install (NOT using Boot Camp) to Windows Vista Ultimate.

I chose "prepare for Windows Vista upgrade". The guest OS loads, and asks me to insert the CD and press ok. Nothing happens.

I start the Vista upgrade manually, and choose "upgrade" After "copying Windows files" finishes,"expanding files" reaches 20%, and I get a message "Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation. To install Windows, restart the installation". I have tried several times with the same outcome.

This is a fairly new, clean installation with not many things installed. I have updated XP with all the latest updates.

I have also requested help from support. Any help would be appreciated.

Update

Just to update everyone... I reinstalled Parallels Tools and uninstalled Windows Messenger (Vista upgrade said it was incompatible, interesting enough) and got past that point; to the next section... But than got the same error

Maybe I should just give up; back everything up, and do a clean install instead of a true upgrade? Other "real" PC users have had this problem, and have solved them. How do I get Microsoft to help me once I tell them I am using Parallels? Is this a problem caused by Parallels or by something in my Windows configuration??

I don't know. I have not yet tried VISTA.

Don't tell M$ you are using Parallels if it is a Windows issue... If you can troubleshoot that far then you are good to go.
