5540 / 5570 Screen Poblem on Leopard

I have tried both 5540 and 5570 on Leopard on my MacBook Pro 15,
and had to revert to 5160 in both cases:

The newer version resulted in a horribly flickering screen. They
only show the portions of the (windows) screen that are updated,
the rest of the screen is black. I tried with various changes in the
video config without success.

Does anyone have the same problem, or have any hints?
