9308 installed, Mac can't access network shares

I recently installed Parallels 5.9308 on a Macbook Pro with SL 10.6.2. Created W7 VM. Prior to the install I could access shared drives on external (not the VM) XP computers, but now I always get "connect failed" when I try.

Note this has nothing to do with the VM -- the problem is that even with PD not running the shares are not accessible.

Is there a way to temporarily remove kernel extensions, etc. to verify that the problem is caused by PD?
 
Now Mac works, but VM still doesn't

I managed to get the Mac OS to be able to access the shared drives by editing /etc/hosts and adding their IP addresses. But the W7 VM still cannot see them.
