Accessing website running on Mac (Apache) using guest Windows XP webbrowser

I'm a webdesigner / webdeveloper and using my MacBookPro to build websites using Apache (virtual-hosts), PHP and MySQL on my Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.3.

When I'm connected to the internet I can use the guest Windows XP Home SP2 with a webbrowser (like WinIE / Firefox on Windows) to access / test my websites running on the Mac (Apache virtual host).

This is done by configuring the Windows XP hosts file to map the local network Mac's IP address to a fake-domain / virtual-host. Then the Mac (Apache) serves the correct website.

BUT this setup does nog work when I'm NOT connected to the internet: like when I'm working on my way to work (train).

Ofcourse this has something to do with the IP address and Windows gateway / DNS. When I ping (from Windows to Mac IP) there's no response.

Can anyone help me with this? I also tried manual IP's to both, no luck. Using Parallels 3.0 build 5608.

Hi,

I guess you should switching your VM to Host routed networking mode because in this mode should be able to access your MAC by its IP address. You can try switching VM to host routed networking mode and then try pinging MAC's ip addresses from within VM to check if it works or no.

I switched Parallels config to 'Host-only networking' (bottom right buttons). Windows XP notices that the internet connection is gone. When I do a 'ipconfig' in DOS-promt there's no 'Default Gateway'. But there is an IP address.

I set the Mac to have DHCP with static IP. When ping from Windows to Mac, there's no response, neither the other way around.

What's the setting on the Mac (network prefs, IP change), what is the setting for Parallels networking (host-only, shared, bridget networking, or default adapter) and do I need to change anything inside Windows network settings?

I'm not that of a tech-guy. Thanx for the reply.
