Guys - is anybody else having this problem.....

Just to preface things - Vista on Parallels from Bootcamp has been working fine for weeks without a problem....

After installing Apples latest SW updates yesterday I was prompted to reactivate Windows Vista Business and it activated OK.
Today most of my functionality (System Properties, Control panel Activation Wizard etc..) has been disabled. I have spoken to Microsoft and they told me to sod off as they don't support Windows on Macs and cannot find anything else on any forums. All I get is a message saying that Windows needs to be activated but cannot get anywhere to do it - although the Internet works fine.

Any help would be appreciated - it is a legit copy of Vista Business.

Yep... I've been having this problem since yesterday.

Has created a huge headache. I've been on the phone with Microsoft to find out if they can understand what's up with the activation.

The problem for me is that in Boot Camp it sees my Windows install as activated and genuine while in Parallels it can't start the Software Licensing Service and claims that Windows is not genuine.

I have a ticket open with Parallels... hopefully they'll figure this one out soon. Its been fine for the past couple of weeks so I dont know why it suddenly breaks..

1. What version of Vista do you have? Mick - Business, what about you, Jared?
2. Was your Vista fully updated by Microsoft Updates?
3. Was your Vista activated in Boot Camp and Parallels before Apple updating?
4. Was it update from Apple for Mac or for Windows (Boot Camp)?
5. If it was update for Windows from where you have installed it: from Boot Camp or from Parallels?

4. Was it update from Apple for Mac or for Windows (Boot Camp)? I believe the last update I installed before the problem was a Windows update.

5. If it was update for Windows from where you have installed it: Parallels.

My parallels support ticket number is 172063 and contains additional details. It seems that within Parallels that the Windows 'Software Licensing Service' is unable to start.

Thx for responding - pleased that it is not only me. And yes if I boot straight into Bootcamp Vista - all is well.

Lets hope parallels can help us out.

Guys,

I have the same "software licencing" service not running issue.

Also I am a Microsoft Reseller and that licence key that I have for Vista Business is valid for 10 activations.
 
Is anyone from Parallels actually investigating this? An acknowledgement would be nice. I have some more details.

I've noticed that everytime I switch between Boot Camp and Parallels that Vista detects and installs an ACPI x86 driver.

There are also some more Windows Event Viewer entries that may be relevant. These ONLY appear when booting from Parallels, they don't appear when booting with Boot Camp:

I try to reproduce your situation, please answer additional question:
Have you installed MacBook Pro Software Update 1.0?

As I understand Jared has different problem.
Jared, please answer my question:
Have you ever activated your Boot Camp Vista under Parallels?
If no, it's right behavior.

Guys, everybody:
If you use VM with Boot Camp partition as HDD you need to activate your Windows in Boot Camp and Parallels both.
 
Hi Archy,

I think I may have discovered what my problem is - one of my windows DLLs was seemingly corrupted (I couldn't open regedit and had the error 'clb.dll contains an error'). A system repair didn't fix this but I copied the file from another machine. Then after regedit worked and activation issues went away.

I guess the problem was that although Windows was activated under Boot Camp, it wasn't activated under Parallels. The corrupted DLL prevented activation which then caused me this load of other errors.

Archy - sorry for the delay - have been away.

My system is a MacPro desktop and all of the available Apple updates had been applied.

Hopefully we can get this fixed soon.

Hi Everyone: I'll chime in here:

I had my Windows Server 2008 activated properly in Parallels 3, then upgraded to Parallels 4. That's when this problem happened with me.

Running Windows Server 2008 from a Bootcamp partition.

I am now having the same problem, and I am kind of happy to find out that I am not alone. I have a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate in my bootcamp partition and also run it in Parallels occasionally. I successfully activated it in both bootcamp and Parallels when I upgraded from Parallels 3 to 4. I think my system worked fine before the 10.5.6 update and a following Apple software update (maybe the keyboard or something) in Windows Vista. And all of a sudden I couldn't see and use my control panel items and the system prompted me to reactivate Windows (in Parallels only, and it worked normally under bootcamp). And similar to everybody else I couldn't complete it because software licensing could not be started and every time I tried to activate it an error came back. I would be glad to see if parallels could fix the problem. And Archy, please find below the answers to your questions:

1. What version of Vista do you have? Ultimate.

3. Was your Vista activated in Boot Camp and Parallels before Apple updating? Yes, both.
4. Was it update from Apple for Mac or for Windows (Boot Camp)? I usually do my updates running in bootcamp. And this time there are system updates for mac (in Leopard) and some driver updates I think for windows (Boot Camp).
5. If it was update for Windows from where you have installed it: from Boot Camp or from Parallels? From Boot Camp.
