avapi32.dll corrupt

Hi,

This is my first post on this site so firstly, hello to you all.

I have been running parallels on my Macbook pro for a while with no problems. Today as XP was booting I got this

It happens even if I try to start in safe mode

I have no idea what it means or what I can do about it, I can't find anything about it with google. Any suggestions?

Sorry to hear about the VM problem. I suppose it could be a malware issue. Some viruses and/or spyware apps alter Windows system files (advapi32.dll is a key part of the Windows kernel) to suit their purposes. It could also be corruption of your virtual disk structure. Problems like these can be difficult to diagnose without special tools. I've used Winternals' ERD Commander in the past to rescusitate dead Windows boxes, but it's a bit expensive.

The easiest solution might be to create a new Windows VM from scratch (clean installation). Then, provided that disk corruption in your old VM is absent or minimal, you could mount it as a second drive in your new VM and recover any important files.

To add your original HD as a second drive you need to go into the Virtual Machine settings (on your new VM) and add a second HD (click + at the bottom of the list of hardware) and point to your old VM .hdd.

I have started to have problems again. XP blue screened today, I tried to run the defragmenter and it told me I needed to run CHKDSK. When I do this it freezes at 18%

OS X seems to be running OK. Any ideas?

I have run a verify disk and verify disk permissions on my hard drive from Disk Utility and everything seems fine but I am still getting errors in windows...

Chkdsk still freezes half way through?

Any ideas?

Can anybody help with this please?

In case the above is illegible -

XP gives me errors asking me to run a chkdsk. I run a chkdsk and it freezes at 18%. This would normally suggest I have a hard drive which is failing. However when I run disk utility on OS X from the installation disk, verify disk gives me no errors.

Should I reinstall parallels?

Is there any other tests I should do to check my HD from OS X?

Any help is very much appreciated.
