Best Back Up Workflow

I am still working out an easy back up workflow.

I have initially thought of just cloning to my external Lacie hard drive once a week (and deleting the previous clone).

Is this adequate? and what are 'Snapshots'? What's the difference between Cloning and Snapshots? - Should I do both?

Snapshots are not backup, it is system state to which you can return,
Cloning is process of duplicating the VM folder
