Wanted to throw a shout out to the Parallels support team - turned out my PD4 issue was apparently related to a SMB issue in the Mac OS. Since our corporate guys image these things, I Time Machine'd it, gave it back, they applied the latest Max OSX image, reloaded my VM, installed PD4, converted the image, and voila, my Mac is now happy running PD4.
Sorry I don't have better detail on the fix (reimaging is not a fix) for those experiencing issues.
