Bonjour scanning problems with Parallels 6

I installed Parallels 6 on my iMac Core i7 running 10.6.4.

My Canon MP640 (multi-function printer/scanner) still printed normally via WiFi, but the 'bonjour' wireless scanning function no longer worked because the scanner was no longer detected by MacOS X. Strangely, it would not detect via USB either.

After re-setting the print system in MacOS X the MP640 would only detect and function as a printer, not a scanner.

I downloaded all the latest drivers from Canon and Apple, and after several re-installations still the same issue....

Finally, I uninstalled Parallels, and now the printer/scanner detects and operates as normal again via WiFi.

Previous reports of this kind of behavior seem to pertain to Parallels 4 and 5, and things like changing to bridged networking are mentioned as possible work arounds. Canon's Mac driver support is shocking and I don't expect any fixes from them anytime soon.

Should I reinstall Parallels 6 and try this switch to bridged networking, or is this most likely a bug with Parallels or Canon software that I should wait for a fix on?

Sorry, I can not understand neither problem nor your setup. Could you please clarify it a bit.

1. Do you have a printer connected to your Mac via USB or via network?
2. Do you have a guest connected to a printer via network or in some other way?
3. Could you please collect problem report and post the number here?

Problem report could be collected as follows:
- start your VM
- check Parallels Desktop -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Use detailed log messages
- connect to your printer as usual, do something with it
- Help -> Report a problem. The server will return you a number
- post number here
- uncheck Use detailed log messages

I'll have to reinstall Parallels before I can get log details and post the number from the server.

In the meantime, to answer your other questions:

(1) My MP640 is not connected to my Mac via USB. The printer connects via WiFi to my broadband router. The broadband router is connected to the Mac via an ethernet cable.

Before installing Parallels, when I go to the printing preferences panel in MacOS X and add a new printer, it scans the network and the MP640 shows up twice, as both a 'printer' and 'scanner'. They are installed as two separate devices, but Mac OS X is connecting to the same unit for each function.

When Parallels is installed, the scanning function will no longer operate, and the 'MP640 scanner' will no longer show up as a detected device over the network. The printing function still works as normal.

As soon as Parallels is removed and I reboot Mac OS X, it will again detect the MP640 as a 'scanner' and function again as normal.

There is something related to Parrallels settings / software that interupts my Mac's ability to see the MP640 as a scanner, yet still allows the same unit to detect and function normally as a printer.

The whole WiFi issue might be a red herring, as I noticed that when Parrallels was installed, the MP640 would not detect as a scanner over a USB cable either. Also, as I mentioned the printer is only connecting wirelessly to the broadband router - from that point the connection to the Mac is a physical one over a standard ethernet cable.

Lastly, the problem occurs whether or not Parrells is actually running at the time.

(2) Networking printing and scanning is disabled. I have no guests connected to the device. My printer connects directly to my iMac - there are no other computers on the network.
