Boot Camp maintenance rules

From other posts it appears that Boot Camp users keep getting scolded (and sometimes having their systems damaged) for doing reasonable-seeming things. To the best of my knowledge these rules aren't well documented. Perhaps they should be. So I'm hoping the folks here can help develop a list of key system-level actions and advice on whether those actions should be performed in the Parallels VM or in Native Boot Camp. Here's my initial cut at a list - please don't hesitate to add to it or correct errors. We could even add third-party tools, like SpinRite, if anyone thinks it's useful.

XP Service Pack installs: Native Boot Camp only
Other XP updates: Native or VM?
chkdsk: Native only
HD/Properties/Tools/Check Now: Native only
 
Hmm...not a single reply. Are we so focused on fixing problems that we have no attention left for preventing them? I still haven't recovered from the consequences of applying XP SP3 from within Parallels. I think the Parallels team, at least, should be willing to confirm or correct the little bit of speculation I supplied here. Or is it actually documented somewhere? What do you think?
