Can I create a VM from a Time Machine backup?

Hello All

I was wondering just out of curiosity whether it is possible, or could become possible to create a new virtual machine from a Time Machine backup.
It would be handy, for example if you wanted to run an app in a previous OS that an update to OS X broke.
I'm sure there are thousands of other uses.
