Cannot install Parallels Tools in Parallels 5 VM

I have a Parallels 5 VM running Windows XP which I ported from Parallels 4. I cannot get Parallels Tools installed on it. After the installation appears to have finished (with a full progress bar) the InstallShield window pauses indefinitely.

I have no network connections available on this VM, nor can I share folders. I think, from reading around, that this problem might be caused by the installer not being able phone home... but I can't sort out the network problems without getting Parallels Tools installed so I can either share files or download files to repair the issue.

Any suggestions?

Could you try to install Parallels Tools again and wait until installer hang (suspend).
Please, create Report a problem at this moment (menu Help - Report a problem) and say Report ID here.
Please, find file c:\windows\temp\parallels-tools-setup.log in the guest Windows and attach it to private message to me. If you cannot extract this file from guest Windows, open it in any editor (f.e. notepad), locate to end of file and create Report a problem with log file text on the screen. I need to see last 5-10-15 strings of this file.

Simon, can you please try to reproduce it again, and when it will be stalled please try to move the "Parallels Tools - Setup Wizard" window somewhere. There could be another message dialog beyond main installer window that paused main installation.

I just had the same problem. Before I gave up on it, I checked the forum here, and followed the suggestion to move the window around. There were no hidden dialogs. I was going to look for your log file , but the host window had shrunk from 1920X1200 down to 640x480 just before the hang, and I decided to try to drag open the host window to enlarge it, because it was annoying to try to find your log filet in he tiny host window. I don't know whether that had anything to do with it, but the installer suddenly became unstuck, and the system restarted.

When it came back up, none of my display settings had been preserved, so I reset them back to what I wanted (which is the Windows Classic style, not the Windows XP style. Yecch!).

Anyway, I found the log file. The last few lines of the file just report nice, completed install traces, and I figure you're more interested in the hang. I'm pasting the relevant section of the log file here. I started the install at around 16:53:14, it stopped at 16:55:58, came unstuck at 17:03:19 and finished at 17:03:20.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you need other parts of the log file.

Having bought my very first mac (iMac) this Tuesday, decided to first Install parallels 5 and get all my Windows only working software over from PC. All is Ok but I'm getting the same problem. Cannot install Parallel Tools inside XP. I can open the cd folder within XP but there are only two folders and no setup program.

I'm new to all this, so not sure if I'm doing something wrong. Everything has been going smoothly until this. I currently have OS X Ver 10.6.2 and Paralells Desktop 5 for Mac build 5.0.9310.

I am right in thinking that Parallel Tools has to be installed within XP for drag and drop to work? In my Virtual machine configuration my Shared Profile + Shared Applications is stating "Not available for this guest operating system".

Any ideas??

Yes, you install Parallels Tools in XP. Parallels Tools is what implements all of the operations between XP and MacOSX. That is, drag and drop, cut and paste, disk and folder sharing, virtual network adapters, peripheral device sharing, etc. It's what integrates XP with the Mac operating system. It actually works very well - I have an occasional problem with XP disks disappearing from the MacOS finder, but it's really pretty solid.

About the Parallels Tools installer -
I'm just guessing here, but when my install got stuck, it was doing some sort of operation with graphics settings. It looks like the other trace posted in this thread was in a similar operation.

My install came unstuck when I dragged the entire XP window open a little larger. This would have the effect of performing a graphic operation in either Prallels or XP, and it may be that this operation removed whatever was blocking the installer. Give it a try - can't hurt. Just make sure you have a backup of your virtual machine file. As they say, "Trust In The Installer, But Back Up Your Data".

Please make sure that type of operating system is correctly set in VM's configuration (afaik it is in the menu Virtual Machine->Configure->General, just below the name of the virtual machine).

generally, to install tools, it is just required to click menu VirtualMachine -> Install Parallels Tools

Thank you all for your replies.

On studying the procedure more closely, it appeared that Parallels was not connecting the correct iso image when trying to install tools. So i therefore manually connected to right iso for windows xp.

I have tried to install Parallels Tools on my vm but keep getting error 1935. I searched the KB and the fix there does not work. I reported the problem to Parallels report number 4150255. does anyone know what I can do to install the tools? I have attached a screenshot of the error.

Can install tools upgrade .. it auto starts but then errors

My system keeps auto starting the tools upgrade .. fine .. but then just about when it's done gives me an error saying it can't find file:

I can't find the file either ... when I cancel, it rolls back and reboots the system ...
now I have an endless loop

I have worked on this problem before but no resolution .. I have reinstalled Parallels, Windows xp, you name it ..
I have downloaded a direct link of the most recent tools, same problem when installing ...

is there a simple solution to this problem yet?

If you're having problems with Parallels Tools Installer hanging:

I posted above about the graphics thing. But it happened to me again on another VM in a completely different place. All of these problems are related to drivers and system files. That's why Parallels has such a hard time fixing these things - Windows installs are like fingerprints: they're all different (which, by the way, is why Apple makes their own machines and won't allow third-party Macs. But I digress).

Anyway, I have three suggestions:

First, has anyone tried this in in Safe Mode? I haven't, but maybe it would help.

Second, find the Parallels Tools installer log file. It's a looonnnng text file, but every entry is time-stamped. See if you can find a place where there is a big time gap - this will be where the hang occurred. Looks around at the log entries in that vicinity - maybe you can spot a clue about what's causing the problem. The file should be in the Windows VM - file c:\windows\temp\parallels-tools-setup.log.

Third, read my other post here. See if it helps any.

This is the actual installer file. It's located in a virtual CD image in the main Library folder on your Mac.

Normally, Parallels will automatically mount this image as a CD in the Windows VM, and automatically run the installer from it.

If that doesn't happen, for whatever reason, you can find the image file yourself and mount it manually. Here's what you do:
With the VM running in Parallels, go to the Parallels "Devices" menu, find "CD/DVD", and select "Connect Image"
When the navigation window comes up, go to the 'Library" folder IN THE MAIN MACINTOSH HD folder, NOT in your user folder. Work your way down to Library/Parallels/Tools and select the file "prl-tools-win.iso". This should mount the CD in Windows.

If prl-tools-win.iso isn't there, then this is likely your problem. Use the Mac Finder to search for the file, and mount it in Windows from wherever you find it.

If the Parallels Tools installer doesn't automatically start up, open the CD in Windows and run "setup.exe".

I mounted the iso file as you suggested ... still got the hang as the install looks for C:/Windows/Temp/setup-parallels-tools.msi .... clicked BROWSE and went to D: (the mounted iso) ... it pulled up Paralells Tools, but the file "setup-parallels-tools.msi" was not there either .... ??? ....

Did you run setup.exe? You don't run the .msi file - that's more or less a data file. You want to run setup.exe.

I went through the whole procedure myself before I posted here, to make sure I had it right. So the .exe file should be there for you.
