Cannot use Ubuntu 8.04 with build 5608 - Graphics is Scrambled

Hi,

I have a problem:

Whenever I try to install Ubuntu 8.04 with Parallels (Mac OS X Leopard), I get a normal install screen, the loading Bar with the Ubuntu Logo, but as soon as I get to anything resembling the Desktop in Ubuntu (you can make out the orange Background), my Screen is completely scrambled like a graphic error. I can see the mouse move, I can enter my username / pw (by just typing and hitting enter) and the desktop loads but I cannot really make out anything because the graphics is just scrambled (horizontally).

This happens with:

* Ubuntu "Live" CD Iso image
* Ubuntu Install from Live image
* Ubuntu Install from Alternate image (text based installer) - installation is fine - as soon as desktop loads: Scrambled

I have tried so far:

* The VGA=790 Parameter
* Setting different Memory (256, 372, 512 MB) for the VM
* Using different VM install setups (Ubuntu, Linux Kernel 2.6, Custom...)
* Disabling Audio before installation
* 2 Different ISOs (see above)
* Changing Setting for "Allow custom Resolution"

No luck.

I have a MacMini Intel Dual Core with the 2.0 GHZ processor, 2GB RAM and 120GB HD.

The monitor is a 40'' LCD TV - Resolution under MacOS is 13xx * xxx (Widescreen, can't remember exact values right now) - both XP and Vista run absolutely fine in a resizable Window or in Coherence.

Alternatively, I have downloaded and installed the VirtualBox from SUN and have tried it there - Ubuntu runs without any problems. But as I really like the Parallels features and have WinXP/Vista running with it no problem I would like to get it working with Parallels as well.

I have looked everywhere and I seem to be the only one with this problem - I could not find any other post or report of this problem anywhere. Please help.

Thanks, I will do this later today and post results in case anyone else has problems like this (or if it doesn't work ;)

No Dice -.-

I set the video memory to 64 MB and had exactly the same Error.

Although I did see another error just as the installer starts:

It says "DMI Bios year present, use acpi=force".

When I do that (with F6) it just tells me that it cannot load the tables for ACPI and I get the same scrambled graphics.

I have attached screenshots this time. I really have no clue what is going on and why I cannot install it.

Do you have any of this?
* Archive of /Library/Parallels/bugreports/
or ~/Library/Parallels/bugreports/

* /Library/Logs/panic.log
or ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Parallels.crash.log from the Mac side;
What I think that build is not updated from previous one,
Did you try to reinstall as described in http://kb.parallels.com/en/4790
One important thing, when installing new build make sure that old dmg or cd is unmounted or not in CD-DVD-rom
 
I just purchased Parallels - I did not have any previous version installed, 5608 is the first build I ever installed.

I have none of those logs - a parallels directory does not even exist - nor does the panic.log.

The only thing I have is in the Library/Logs/Parallels/bootcamp.log - will attach this one but I am not running bootcamp on this mac so I don't think it will help.

Did the screenshots help? Is there anything else I can provide you with?

I don't know what you mean by "Did I install Parallels Tools"?

I installed Parallels, using the installer. Then it runs. There was no option to install or not install Tools (And on XP and Vista VMs, the tools are there and work fine (Installed by Setup Wiz)).
Within the Ubuntu install I do not even get to the point where I could install anything - the screen scrambles as soon as it goes into desktop mode.

I have attached a screenshot of my Parallels Application folder - only has a "Disk Image Tool"

I tried the instructions to de-install and re-install Parallels 5608 again (I checked - it was 5608 before de-install and is again).

Tried Ubuntu VM - same error(s).

Frustrating.

Ok, it is good that you didn't try to run Parallels Tools
but usually acpi=force is helping
Try to select OS type Vista, and add acpi=force, if it didn't help,unfortunately for now no solution, need to wait next build
 
Choosing Vista unfortunately also didn't help.

I did not get the "Could not load System Tables" error when using acpi=force anymore - but the Ubuntu Progress bar when installing just hangs - nothing happens anymore.

Giving up.

Can anyone who has successfully installed Ubuntu 8.04 under Parallels 5608 with MacOS leopard tell me EXACTLY what they have done / chosen from the menu to instlall it, where they got the install iso etc?

I really don't understand why it does not work for me...

Odd - I had no problem installing kubuntu 8.06 on 5604. I use KDE3.5 rather than gnome or KDE4.0.

The only issue with 8.04 I have is the network issue - where I have to run "sudo dhclient eth1".

And I was thinking about updating.
