can't install Tools after upgrade

I bought the box off the shelf of the Apple Store this weekend for my new MacBook. Thanks for posts on these forums, I managed to get Win98 installed and running, albeit with the 640x480x16 video limitation. Then I noticed it was version 1970 and Parallels is currently at 3188, so I downloaded the most recent release and upgraded. However, I am unable to get the new Tools to install. When I start the VM I get the message that the Tools are out of sync with the version of Parallels installed. Trying to install the new Tools never finishes, even after waiting hours. I've uninstalled the old Tools, but I still can't install the new ones. It's trying, because the menu item says "Cancel Parallels Tools installation" but nothing happens.
 
You need to uninstall the old tools using Windows Add/remove programs. Then reboot the VM. then install the new tools using the ACTIONS drop down menu.

As I said, ''I've uninstalled the old Tools, but I still can't install the new ones. It's trying, because the menu item says "Cancel Parallels Tools installation" but nothing happens.'' I wait quite a long time, on the order of 15 minutes. If a process takes more than a few seconds without some kind of visual feedback to the user, that's a problem. There needs to be a progress bar or something.
 
parallels tools? where...

excuse me but what are those parallels tools, you´ve mentioned?

i bought the "parallels dektop" box and no "Tools Option" was given to me, during instalation...

must i download some files, firmware or updates to get those tools everyone talks about?

im stuck with the "USB-in-use" warning, when i plug a external pen when i run my VM windows xp!
 
I too am stuck in the same situation as the original poster.
After upgrading to the 3188 release of Parallels, I had to uninstall the Parallels Tools from my Win98 VM, and now when I attempt to reinstall, nothing happens.
The option in the Actions menu changes to "Cancel Parallel Tools Installation" but that is it. As far as I can tell, nothing is installed on the running VM.

Parallels Tools does not show as an option on Add/Remove Programs, and my video resolution is stuck at 640x480, 16 colors, which hinders the useability of that Windows install.
I have added additional screen resolutions in the Video Resource of the Configuration Editor, but they do not show up as options for changing my video settings when Windows is running.

I have been running with this Windows VM since Parallels 2.1 over a year ago, and occasionally have had problems getting Parallels Tools to install after some upgrades (it worked well on the version before 3188), but I've never had problems with the video like this. I just ordered the upgrade to 3.0, so hopefully it'll be fixed by the time that comes out, but if there's a workaround before that, I'm willing to try it out.

Sorry to hear that, but it's good to know I'm not the only one. (I'm not crazy! Just going that way...) I've tried reinstalling the VM about 6 times now. Most attempts left me with uninstalled drivers, so back to the tried and true install directions found on this forum. (Windows in a small window is still Windows, at least.) I tried reinstalling Parallels itself too. I noticed that the Win98 VM does not "see" the CD image when I try to load the Tools. I follow the directions in the install and change 0:1 to 1:0 but that doesn't help. Maybe there's some other Windows-ish thing I need to do...sacrifice goats to Ballmer, or something?

I noticed that Win98 wasn't seeing a CD drive under My Computer in the latest Parallels builds (3188 and the new 3212).

I did a clean install of a new Win98 VM the other day after the latest Parallels upgrade to 3212, and ended up worse off than my previous VM because the new install had no CD drive to read the Windows CD after the initial install. Thus no way to access the CD to install drivers for anything.

So I went to my old Win98 VM, changed the CD IDE position config from 0:1 to 1:0 as you mentioned (this may or may not have made a difference), then started it up.
In Windows, I went to Control Pannel and did Add New Hardware.
Let Windows do a search, first for Plug and Play (most of these should have drivers on the Windows CD, so if they aren't installed already, they can't be now, so cancel any that pop up).
It should give a list and ask Yes or No if the device you want to install is in that list. Choose No, then Next>
This will bring up a search for non-Plug and Play, choose Yes and Next to let Windows search.
It came back with a Hard Drive controller (I don't remember the exact one), accepted it for install, then I was able to see a CD drive icon under My Computer. I verified it worked by inserting a CD in the drive and accessing it in Windows.

After the CD drive was visible, I attempted the Install Parallels Tools command and this time it worked, installing properly.

Hopefully this will work for you too.
