Can't load Windows XP

If anyone can assist I would appreciate it. Parrallels for Mac is loaded fine. I inserted Windows XP Pro with SP 2 disk as instructed. The black text screen says: "Boot from hard drive: failed; Boot from CD/DVD: failed. Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and press any key." Pressing any key only duplicates the failure.

I purchased a non-OEM version of Windows XP per the instructions, however, the disc says "For distribution with a new PC only." I do not know if this means it's an OEM version or not. The box does not it say it is an OEM version.

I am stuck at this point.

Original equipment manufacturer, or OEM, is what you need just like a home PC builder assembling hardware

You manufacture the VM

I got my own WinXP sp2 OEM dvd from a shop selling PC motherboards
cheap fakes bought on the net don't usually work

and I was horrified to find my older WinXP installer would only update an existing intstallation

I have an OEM version of XP Pro and am getting the same error upon install. It works on my macbook but not my macbook pro??

I bought a new, unopened OEM version of XP Pro SP2 from a local used computer store. Here is what it says on the disk:

Microsoft WindowsXP Professional
For distribution with a new PC only. For product support, contact the manufacturer of your PC.
Includes Service Pack 2
Version 2002

Same issue but with XP Pro upgrade CD

I'm getting the same black screen that indicates failed boot from CD/DVD-ROM drive and cannot proceed with the installation. I have a brand new licensed XP Pro SP2 upgrade CD that I just purchased from Amazon.com. I have an existing Windows 2K licensed CD in which I'm upgrading from. I'm using Parallels 3.0. Any ideas?

The problem with OEM versions of Windows is that they can only be installed on one machine. If you buy an OEM version that is intended for a computer shop that assembles its own PC's, all should be well if that copy of Windows has never been activated before.

However, if you buy an OEM version, say a Dell version, that means that XP came pre-loaded on the Dell and this copy of XP is just available in case the original user has to reinstall XP. It is only good on the original machine.

If you buy a full, retail version, then it can still be installed on only one PC at a time...but at least you can uninstall it from one PC and move it to another.

Have you tried creating a custom VM machine? Also make sure you DVD is connected to the VM machine.

If that still does not work, use Apple Disk Utility to create an ISO image of your windows boot CD and use that as a boot device in the virtual machine.

Try google if you need instructions to create the ISO image, I may not monitor this thread again today, so I would not be able to help you further today.

Parallels installed fine. It appears the inital virtual machine is created properly. The Windows disc is inserted when prompted, and the initial install takes place. When the blue install screen finishes loading the Windows drivers and says, "Starting Windows" the infamous Windows "blue screen of death" suddenly appears, and the install terminates.

Help would be appreciated. I'd be rather upset at both Parallels as well as Microsoft if this $250 combined software purchase is useless.

OK... I discovered my own answer out of desperation of what else to try. It seems Windows did not want to install from the CD in a virtual machine. I used the Parallels image tool to create an image of the XP disc on the MacBook. Installation went flawlessly this time. I'd like to know why this is happening, however.

At any rate, I'm running XP in Coherence mode, and I must say it is very nice!!

Having the same problem trying to install XP Home SP2, just purchased from OfficeMax. How did you get Parallel Tools to work without the installation working? Is there another way to create an ISO?

I purchased XP SP2 as well. Ever wonder how they can sell a new Windows machine for $300 when the operating system itself costs $200?

Parallels installed properly on my machine. It was when trying to install Windows itself that the "Blue Screen of Death" occured. Since Parallels installed properly, I used their ISO image tool to create an image of the Windows CD on the Mac harddrive. I'm new to Macs, but I believe you can create an ISO image with Mac provided utilities as well. You'll find the Parallels ISO tool under the Parallels directory in your Applications folder. Do not start Parallels itself to create an image.

Once Parallels is properly installed and the ISO image is created, proceed with the Windows install. When prompted for the Windows CD, click additional options in Parallels, and you'll be presented with the option to install from an ISO image. From that point, just follow the Windows prompts for installation.

Well it was getting late last night, maybe my eyes are going but I couldn't find anything in the Parallels directory that said Image or ISO (got Tranporter and Explorer). I did try installing the Parallel tools, while installing XP - which created an interesting variation on the same problem. I also was all over the Parallels website looking for the image or ISO tool to download, and even went in to the User Manual, but no dice.
I'm going to clean out Parallels completely and try again.

I don't see anything about a Parallels ISO image tool either (although I'm using 2.5), but you can use Disk Utility to create a disk image. Open Disk Utility and choose Help > Disk Utility.

I think the big 'ah ha" for me is that we are talking about an ISO of the Installation DVD, not an image of the "installed" operating system. So that I think I can manage with the OSX Disk Utility.
