Can't run Windows 7 64 bit installation disk

Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. Trying to upgrade from XP to Windows 7 64 bit. I am following the microsoft upgrade instructions to the letter. Each time I try to run the 64 bit installer disk I get the following dialog:

"The installation disk isn't compatible with your version of Windows. To upgrade, you need the correct installation disk. For more info, check your computer's system information. To install a new version of windows, restart (boot) your computer using the installation disk, then select custom (adavanced)."

I don't understand why it is rejecting the 64 bit disk. I have run the upgrade adviser and it is telling me there is no problem with a 64 bit installation of Windows 7 - new MB Pro with 8g ram (4 g allocated to the PC), 2.66 core i7 processor, snow leopard, PD 5.0.9344.

Any help appreciated.

The other thing is, I tried to follow the advice in the dialog box and tried to boot the VM using the 64 bit installer disk but even though I configured the boot order so that the VM was supposed to boot from the Windows 7 disk first, the VM refused to boot from the W7 disk and booted from the hard disk anyway.

It's got me stumped. So I performed a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit, created a new VM, and that was fine, but I will need to purchase new keys for Norton and MS Office! So I really want to upgrade the XP VM!
