Connecting to Oracle on Windows 2008 VM from host mac

I have an Oracle 11g database running on a Windows 2008 virtual machine on my Mac. I can connect to the database on the Windows machine, but I cannot connect from my Mac. It doesn't recognise the 'hostname' for the Windows VM. I've tried using the ip address and the host name of the Windows machine, but the Mac doesn't recognise either. Anyone any ideas?

PS I'm using Shared networking.
 
OK using Bridged network

Meant to say that this works OK using Bridged network; Default adaptor. However, that exposes the VM on the network my Mac is connected to.
