Control and Alt keys in Final Fantasy XI

The normal windows behavior for Final Fantasy XI control and alt keys are to pull up a macros menu in the game while you are holding either of the keys down. I just installed Parallels 7 trial on my 11" Macbook Air, and so far FFXI works great, except for the control and alt keys. I hold down either key and no macros menu pops up at all. I am only interested in Parallels for FFXI and will just delete it if it I can't get it to work.

I tried unchecking all of the options in the keyboard section of the preferences, and that didn't help, either. I want to be able to play FFXI on my Macbook Air when I am out of town or away from home.

Can anyone give me any ideas or insight on how I might be able to get normal windows behavior from the control and alt keys in FFXI?

I had some troubles like this when I moved to OS X Lion and it was due to Mission Control. I finally got it fixed by going to System Preference > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Mission Control, and disabling all shortcuts under the 'Mission Control' section.

It wouldn't make sense why this would cause your Alt key not to work, but for me it got the Ctrl key working again.

So worth a shot I suppose.

I just upgrade to Lion and Parallels 7 and things so far seem to be working. I held off for a while because of reported issues with FFXI within Parallels 7.
 
I'm running Final Fantasy 11 via Parallels Desktop 7. If you go into Preferences, then look in the Virtual Machine Shortcuts, there should be short cut that uses Alt + 1 + Tab which is mapped to Win + Tab. This is eating the Alt key. Just uncheck it and you should be able to use the Alt key in FFXI.

I got parallel's and windows 8 today and everytime it gets to select character screen it freezes and shuts down parallel's...
anyone know why?
 
I don't have much experience with FFXI within Windows 8, but I do know that running FFXI within Windower on Windows 7 can cause a crash at the character select screen if User Control Access is anything but turned completely off. You might want to try that, just realize that by turning it completely off, Windows will no longer warn you when anything on your computer tries to make a change to your system. Therefore, you'll be more open to vulnerabilities like malware and viruses.

If that doesn't work, ensure you have DirectX 9 installed. I believe FFXI prefers DirectX9 over 10 and ensure the shortcut for FFXI is being both "Ran as Administrator" and using "Windows XP compatibility mode". These are all common issues that people run across when attempting to run FFXI on Windows and hopefully one of those things will resolve your issue.
