dvds won't play on windows 7 on my imac

Hi,
I have Windows 7 Ultimate installed on my iMac via Parallels 6. When Windows 7 is running, I can't get dvds to play. The dvd drive doesn't even show up on my mac osx, snow leopard. And when i go to play the dvds in the Windows 7 environment, I get an error message saying that I might not have permission to play the dvds on the dvd drive. When Windows 7 is not running, however, dvds play just fine. As soon as I pop in a dvd, my iMac's dvd player automatically launches, and the dvd plays. But I don't want to have to shut down windows 7 every time I want to watch a dvd. Can someone help. I have searched google for help, but I was not able to find anything close to what I'm experiencing.

The solution is simple - just switch your DVD drive from Windows to Mac OS X side.
Currently, your DVD drive is connected to Windows virtual machine and when you start Windows, DVD drive gets connected to Windows (and as real device cannot be used by two operating sstem simultaneously, it disconnects from Mac OS X).

To disconnect it from Windows and connect back to Mac OS X, on the top dropdown menu of Parallels Desktop (when your virtual machine is open) click 'Devices' > CD/DVD 1 > Disconnect.

Note: You may need to switch to windowed view mode if you are running in Coherence to be able to see top Parallels Desktop menu.

But do you have any idea why I can't get dvds to play on Windows?
 
Related Issue - Fixed

My problem was somewhat related, and I was able to fix it via the above. Hopefully the following might prove helpful for your DVD not playing.

When using my virtual Windows 7, I couldn't get Office 2010 to install. Although my DVD drive showed up in Windows, and simultaneously showed in OS X, neither would launch the install of Office.

At first, I disconnected the DVD drive from parallels, and tried to launch the install from OS X - but got an error. So then using the same menu ("Devices") in parallels, I chose "Real CD/DVD", and suddenly the installation window popped up in my Windows environment. Everything went smoothly from there.

This is my one and only attempt, so I've no idea if this will be helpful to your issue or not, but thought I'd at least write a quick post while its fresh. Good luck!
