Error - Configuration file specified is invalid

Hey all,

Normally, what would be the first troubleshooting step towards the error message "The configuration file you specified is invalid"??

Please note that Parallels is updated to the latest version, and that there is a problem with viewing the newest snapshots under the Snapshot Manager (only the manually made snapshots show up, regardless what setting is used under "Backup")

I upgraded to Parallels 11 yesterday. As soon as Parallels tried to take a Snapshot, I got a message "The configuration file you specified is invalid" and the Snapshot process failed. Does anyone know why Parallels suddenly can't take Snapshots because of the invalid configuration file?

Hi PeterC12, make sure you have at least 2GB of free disk space on the Mac HD.
Check permissions of the virtual machine bundle.
Go to virtual machine's Configuration > Security > Require password to Manage Snapshots, make sure this option is disabled.
If the issue still persists, merge the snapshots by following the steps mentioned in this article and then delete it.
Now try to create a snapshot and check how it goes.
 
1) I have 1.5 TB free 2) I checked permissions - no problem 3) Password is not required.
I can create manual snapshots but since upgrading to Parallels 11, SmartGuard snapshots are failing because of the problem "The configuration file you specified is invalid".

Hi PeterC12,
Stop the virtual machine
Create a backup copy of the virtual machine's hdd (create a copy of /var/parallels/MyVM.pvm/harddisk.hdd)
Manually delete the snapshots:
# prl_disk_tool merge --hdd /var/parallels/*****.hdd
Rename existing Snapshots.xml file and Snapshots folder:
# mv /var/parallels/***.pvm/Snapshots.xml{,_bk}
# mv /var/parallels/****.pvm/Snapshots{,_bk}
Start the virtual machine, make sure it is running ok.
Run backup command once again.
