Excel 2003 & F4 key

Excel has the very convenient tool of pressing F4 once to add the $ to block any cell or range.

Unfortunately, when running Office 2003 in Parallels (WXP) on my Mac, pressing F4 brings up the gadgets.

WOuld anyone know how to assign the natural key functions when I'm on the Windows side of life?

Is it F4 or Shift+F4?

In any case, there are two options you can try:

1. In Parallels Desktop -> Preferences -> Keyboard & mouse, uncheck the option "enable Mac OS system shortcuts".

2. You can simply disable the corresponding hot key on the Mac side: System preferences -> Keyboard & mouse -> Keyboard shortcuts.
 
Thank you for your answer. This has stopped "Exposé" from taking over, however Word does not recognise me using F4 yet.

Any idea on how to make the link?
 
Is it only with Word or Guest OS does not recognize F4 key in general?
For example, if you will open any kind of folder (i.e. "My computer") pressing F4 will selects the "Go To A Different Folder box" and move down the entries in the box (if the toolbar is active in Windows Explorer).

Hello,
It appears that all F keys are inactive from F1 to F4 after deactivating shortcuts in the Parallels preference menu. There is no reaction either on the onscreen keyboard when I use these 4 keys on the Windows side. Other shortcuts do function (music, volume control on the keyboard).

So no, Guest OS does not recognise the F4 key in general when system shortcuts are dactivated.

Any idea to help?

Cannot access F2 in PC mode

Whilst using parallels I cannot access the function keys until I remapped via your instructions (fine - good system you have there F2 now equals fn2) but now I also need to use the space bar in this app to start and stop voting systems. Can you please advise how I can do that.
 
I think i have a solution

Go to Mac's system preferences and choose "keyboard". Then ensure "use all f1, f2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is checked. This allows you to use the function keys as you would normally expect in Windows, plus you can access the Mac functions by holding down the fn key and then pressing the function key you would like.
