excel for mac opening instead of excel for xp

Bit poster
friends destop 7 opens excel or mac rather than the expected excel for windows. how to correct this or are both completely (formulas in particular) compatible?
 
I'm having the same trouble except I have Windows 7 (via parallels) My MAC excel keeps opening up and I can't use the mac version for work because it does not allow the macros in my spreadsheet. Any other come across this or have a solution?
 
Try this:
1. Save any Excel spreadsheet on the Mac side (for example on Desktop)
2. Right click on it > Get Info
3. In "Open With" section chose Windows version of Excel and hit Change All.

Now your Excel will be opened on the Windows side by default
