External Drive not saying connected

I have an external drive which doesn't stay connected in Windows once I logout/suspend windows. i can go to devices, find my external drive name, and then uncheck it and recheck it to get it to available in windows. I may have to do the uncheck/recheck several times. Any suggestions on a permanent solution?
