Fast gigabit networking

Parallels for Mac currently emulates an RTL8029 (Realtek) network card. That card is a mere 10BaseT card, which is agonizingly slow compared to the gigabit ethernet cards/chipsets sitting inside every Intel Mac. I would like to see emulation of a gigabit card, preferably one that can also support jumbo frames in a good way. So many cards don't do jumbo frames very well, including a number of Realtek cards that top out at around an MTU of 7000 when 9000 is routine.

I routinely move gigabytes worth of data across my network, so I set up a full gigabit ethernet network in my house. It's extremely time-wasting to transfer data at anything short of full gigabit speeds.
 
RTL8029(AS) is just a "way" to guest OS to communicate with real network, speed of it is not really equal to speed of real 10Mbit card.

So overall speed of network for Virtual Machine equal to speed of real card minus overhead, that we get for emulation.
 
With Parallels drivers installed, including the network drivers, I check the status of the network connection and see 10Mbps. That means Windows thinks it's only running at 10BaseT speeds. How do you get faster speeds when Windows doesn't believe you can go faster?

Unfortunately, I could only check status on my Vista install, which showed 10Mbps. On my XP install, status refused to show anything at all, which I've found is a maddening bug that pops up on more than just a few PC's. If you right click on a connection and select Status, it's supposed to pop up a dialog showing you your speed and IP address, etc., but in my XP VM, nothing happens and no dialog pops up.

So if my Vista believes it's only going at 10Mbps, is it lying to me and is really going faster? If it's telling the truth, how do I get it to go faster?
 
Do you beleive that Windows limits connection speed according to speed shown in properties of network driver? It just send packets and when packet sent it send next packet etc.

Try to send or receive smth and you will see difference.

You were really starting to show some promise as a valuable contributor to these forums.

But that has just been blown out of the window.

If you had taken the time to understand, you would be aware that most of the Parallels staff do struggle a bit with fluent english. Remember, that many immigrants to english speaking countries can be recognised as such by their non-fluent english, even after many years of living in that country. This DOES NOT mean that these people can not be valuable contributors to that society. Smth, obviously is a typo for something.

Overall, the intent of your post is derogatory. The delivery inconsiderate.

Perhaps it is you that should wake up.

I'm no expert on windows internals but I have seen the network speed stuff be confused before.

When installing Windows XP with a brand new out of the gate gigabit LAN card it refused to report anything more then 10 mps. Yet we timed file transfers to be well above 100 baseT rates.

So I tend to agree with Ynot... The speed report is NOT always the speed you get.

Simply put my WinXP Parallels moves files on the network like gangbusters.

I'm with Constant on this one. Let's cut the Parallels folks some slack. They appear not to have English as a first language. We know they are rushed. I'm sure they reply here in spare minutes without a lot of proofreading because most techies would understand -- I certainly do. heir job is to deliver working code, not polished hand holding.

Also, attacking people on lailing lists is very rude, and against the rules on most lists. If someone tries a personal attack on one of the many lists I moderate, they get one warning, and then are unsubscribed if they do it again. I don't tolerate it.

This pissing contest helps no one, so let's drop it now, shall we. This is a technical list -- let's keep it that way. Most of us have no time for this petty nonsense.

Kingfish's response is totally uncalled for. There was no insult in the response from Parallels. They had already explained it runs at full speed minus overhead which I'm sure is a nebulous number. What more do you want them to say. Insulting certainly isn't going to produce a more useful answer.
