Freezing at the "Welcome" screen after today's update

I accepted the update today to 9.0.24217, and after restarting my windows hangs at the "Welcome" screen. I can boot it in safe mode but not normally. I've disconnected the only peripherals (keyboard and mouse) and still no joy. Any suggestions on where to look would be greatly appreciated. Right now this things a doorstop.
