Gratuitous Upgrade

I discovered the hard way that Microsoft upgraded my Windows 7 VM to Windows 10. The upgrade did not include reinstalling all my Windows 7 applications, so I was dead in the water until I extracted windows 7 from Time Machine. My copy of Adobe Illustrator CS2 will not install in windows 10, so I can't use Windows 10.

How can I prevent Microsoft from giving me this ruinous upgrade?

you can try to turn off automatic updates in your Windows 7 OS by following the steps which will prevent your Windows 7 OS from automatically upgrading to Windows 10.
-> Click Start, type Windows update in the search box, and then click Windows Update in the Programs list.
-> In the left pane, click Change settings.
-> Select the option that you want.
-> Under Recommended updates, select the Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates or Include recommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about updates check box, and then click OK.
