Has Parallels Nuked My Macbook?!

hey guys,
i installed the latest parallels beta (3120) and installed it.

having never used parallels tools before i didnt need to uninstall it from bootcamp.

so i installed parallels tools on my bootcamp xp installation.

worked great! really really liked it.

i left my macbook alone for a bit and the screensaver came on.
however, when i tried to log back in, the screen stayed black no matter what i did. i pushed all sorts of keys etc. but the screen stayed black.

i held the power button to reboot.


now when i try to boot into osx it says i need to hold the power button and restart, which repeats when i follow that instruction.
and it cant boot into bootcamp, it says im missing hal.dll


what can i do guys?:(

any and all help is appreciated.

ps-keep up the good work, the new beta looked great!
 
Try booting with the OSX DVD by holding don the C key.
Once the DVD boots go to the Disk Utility and see if you can repair the OSX disk.

i did. and i could hear the cd speeding up. about 20-30 seconds later it reverts to the reboot screen.
i also tried holding alt and then selecting cd, same result.

One last question.
What happens when you hold down the "ALT"/OPTION key?

it takes me to the boot option screen, where i can choose windows, mac or cd to boot from.
i choose cd and the apple logo appears. then it goes to the reboot screen.

I understand that. But can you boot into OSX and/or Windows?

Had this problem with the earlier beta. The only way i could get round it was reformatting my MacBook using Knoppix (you can use a GParted LiveCD, but it didn't work so well for me). Luckily I'd only had it for a week so I didn't lose much data.

The last post in this thread, by OrangeFurious, summarises all the solutions users came across.

TechTools should be the easiest to get hold of; especially if he has AppleCare.

i dont have apple care, but the laptop is only 3 months old. from apple.

I was wondering, does anyone know why this happens and if there's anything that can be done to prevent the issue?
 
Whoa! Before reformatting!

Have you tried resetting the PRAM?

Resetting PRAM on Power Macintosh Computers
1. Locate the following keys on your keyboard - Command (Apple), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 2.
2. Restart your Macintosh and hold down the Command-Option-P-R key combination. You must press this key combination before the Welcome to Macintosh screen appears.

3. Hold the keys down until the Macintosh restarts itself four times.

4. Release the keys after the Macintosh restarts four times.

5. Your Parameter RAM in your Macintosh is reset to the default values. The clock settings are not changed.



After doing that, boot into single user mode (hold down the s key while rebooting). When you get to the prompt, type fsck -y

That should detect and repair the file structure. Once complete, reboot normally.

anyone know how to create a bootable cd for mac in windows xp?

i have a .cdr file with a MAC_OSX folder.

Unless something has drastically changed -
Power PCs do not run BOOT - CAMP!
Sorry make that CANNOT run.

Boot from the Install DVD that came with your computer while holding down the "D" key.
