.hdd virtual image

Are .hdd image cross platform compatible ? That is, can i take a the .hdd from mac os x, and add it as a boot volume to a parallels workstation under windows ?
 
I understand .hdd images would be a virtual image of a physical hard drive and thats it..

Kind of like how .iso image are mages of cd

I came to the conclusion that these .hdd images do have something when there created showing that their only for mac or windows... is this correct ?
