HELP - You need to manually continue the configuration process

Hi all,

Did a search on this, and came up with an answer that said I need to switch to manual mode or something, but don't understand. The original forum thread is here http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?t=33094

Everytime I launch my virtual machine from within mac os, it takes about 5 minutes to load, and then comes up with the message "You need to manually continue the configuration process" When I click ok, windows starts and then runs, but its a bit weird. Can someone explain to me how I can solve this in very simple english as I'm not the most technical person in the world.

Also, whilst we're at it, is there a way to automatically resize windows to the size of the VM window? At the moment, the only way I have found is to fiddle with the resolution settings to get as near a match as I can.

Having the same problem - what's the secret?

I'm having exactly the same problem. I tried to press Ctrl-Option-Command-R to get to manual mode but AFAIK that did nothing.

Ok, can't find the article that I read to fix this, but its something along the lines of this.

Let the virtual machine start up and wait for it to do its installation step 1 of 4 thing.

When you get the error message come up again, click ok, and windows will load up, but will be all screwy asking you to install drivers and all the rest of it.

Go to the parallels menu at the top of the screen and click on devices, then navigate to cd/DVD rom, and then click on connect image.

Then, you want to navigate to macintoshHD > Libaray > Parallels > Tools > prl-tools-win.iso

Click ok and the virtual machine should complete the rest of the installation. It started from step 4 of 4 for me, so where the other two steps went, who knows. Hope that helps.

Will try Tuesday, ... but

All I get in the Windows VM box is the login screen. I got rid of the Ctrl-Alt-Del to log in requirement, but the login box still appears. I need to either click OK or press Enter -- neither of which I can do.

In other words I don't see the request for drivers at all. BTW, I ran Transport again with the Windows machine booted into safe mode. That didn't do it either.

Ok, not sure if I can help or not. if you are having the same trouble as I did, the above steps will solve it. If you can't do anything in windows, make sure you've clicked the window to activate it as opposed to being in the Mac os if you see what I mean? Maybe someone more technical can help you further if this doesn't work for you.
 
Same problem ends in BSOD

I have the same problem where the configuration never finishes. If I click continue, Windows tries to boot but ends in a Blue Screen. It's a generic Blue Screen so there is nothing to search. Any suggestions?
 
I solved a lot of my problems

when I upgraded to v4 by doing the following (I have a Boot Camp partition of XP).

-Booted into XP and uninstalled Parallels Tools
-Booted back into the Mac OS and deleted the configurations in the Parallels folder in my Documents folder
-Started Parallels desktop, which squeaked about not finding the configurations.
-Created a new configuration, and worked my way through the manual configuration.

It takes a long time to configure Windows (let it run and do it's thing) but in the end I came up with a rock solid install.
 
Trying not to use Bootcamp

I'm trying to do this without Bootcamp. I'd like to transfer everything (including Windows) from my old Sony notebook.

Len, do you think your suggestion will work without Bootcamp? Thanks. - Tony
 
I would think so, but I don't know why you wouldn't want Boot Camp. Every once in awhile I boot into full blown Windows if I need to do some heavy lifting on some stuff.
 
I got this very problem. After I click OK it complains that it cannot mount the image. Then windows starts up but gets blue screen ~*10 seconds into startup.. I get the STOP 0x0000007B message. Then windows reboots and gets stuck with the same blue screen. When I boot into it with boot camp it works fine. I've already tried the ordanary register-solution to 0x0000007B.. It doesn't solve the problem.. Also, I think the parallels configuration installation process is replacing the restored drivers..
 
I have concluded that Parallels just doesn't work very well when you're trying to create a Windows VM on the Mac if both machines are notebooks. In my case, the source machine is a Sony Vaio and the target is a MacBook Pro. I have switched to VMware Fusion and am very happy with it.

Parallels tech support did their best, but when all else failed Parallels refunded my purchase price immediately. I have nothing bad to say about Parallels. Their solution just didn't work for me. - Tony
