How best to install Anti virus ?

I've just bought an iMac and have installed Parallels and then installed Windows 8.1 to run Office.

I presume there is no anti virus protection on the machine.

What is the best approach to anti virus software, should I look for a Mac anti virus program to protect the whole machine or do I need separate anti virus programs for the Mac and the Windows virtual machine ............. or might it be that only the Windows VM needs anti virus and the Mac side of things takes care of itself ?

On my previous Windows PC I used AVG (paid version) and found it good.

If you would like to install Anti-Virus on both Mac and Windows Virtual Machine, you need to purchase a separate Anti-Virus for Mac and a separate Anti-Virus for Windows.

Anti-Virus for Mac will not prevent your Windows Virtual Machine.

Normally Mac computers are more protective than Windows.

If you would just prefer to protect your Windows Virtual Machine you can install Anti-Virus for Windows or if you would like to protect both your Mac

and Windows you can install the Anti-Virus program on both the Operating Systems.
 
Windows 8 already comes with Windows Defender (Microsoft Security Essentials) which is a basic AV.
 
I am a novice to using Parallels on my MacAir. I use a PC program for genealogy that is only PC based. There is another PC program that works with my present genealogy PC program that I want to download. Unlike GlenSydney, I will be using the internet from the PC side of my computer because this supplemental program interfaces with the internet in search of information. My question is if I get an anti virus program such as AVAST for the PC side of my computer, will the MAC side be safe since I will not be crossing over from one side to the other while the PC program is open? Can anyone share their experience?
