How is Bridged network mode supposed to work?

I am trying to use bridged mode in my VM of Windows 7 64 bit with it bridged to my thunderbolt adapter that is manually configured. Doing so I get a 169 address in my VM... Shouldn't I get the manually configured address from the mac side? I ask because I swear this was working before I changed IP addresses and now it's not. I'm running parallels 11 but have had this issue with 10 and 9 as well in the past.

In Bridged mode you'll get your IP from the router by DHCP as if it's just another computer on your network, or you can configure it statically. What is it exactly that you're trying to do?
