How long does Parallel Tools take to install?

Same problem - hung up on step 4 of 4 for hours
The install progress bar for "Installing the latest version of Parallels Tools (step 4 of 4) appears to be complete, but there's been no activity for more than an hour now. I just tried to quit the application and got the "Cannot close the virtual machine window - wait until the operation is complete" message.

Update
Just checked the MacBook Pro Activity Monitor, and both the Parallels desktop and the Virtual Machine do appear to still be churning along.
It's been hours since the Parallels Tools install process started, and there's still no indication about how much longer this process is going to take. It sure would be useful to have a "suspend install" and "resume install" option if this process is going to take all day. I also have no way of knowing whether the Activity Monitor blips are evidence of useful install progress or just spinning gears in an endless loop.
I'd appreciate any insights into the process, especially whether I'm going to corrupt the entire 3.0 to 4.0 upgrade process if I have to force quit the Parallels application.

Annoying
Many hours later, after a hard re-start and another attempt to install Parallels Tools, I'm back to the step four of four death spin. The install bar leaped all the way to the end again, then just hung there, grinding away. It's been at least 30 additional minutes into this new install process.
If anyone has suggestions about how to finally finish this tool install, I'd be appreciative.

Tried manual mode suggestions, multiple crashes
Providing a running commentary here in case it helps anyone else...
After upgrading from version 3 to version 4, I can start the Virtual Machine. Windows XP runs up, I get a note about re-certifying Windows and MS Office, then get a prompt to install Parallels Tools. If I don't use the pulldown menu to install the tools, the process starts automatically.
Again, the tools install moves quickly to step 4 of 4, then hangs up. Switching to manual mode with (control / alt / command / r) immediately crashes the VM. Here are the details I submitted with my formal support trouble ticket:

I'm on a MacBook Pro (late 2008 edition, OS x 10.5.7, 2.5 GHx Intel Core Duo, 4 GB RAM).
I successfully (I thought) converted the VM because XP (SP3) did launch. I was prompted to install the Parallels Tools; it reached step four of four and then hung up for hours. After a hard re-start and a few more attempts, I tried the manual upgrade option.
Twice now I've gotten a stark blue screen with the following white text:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. ... [adequate disc space, check; no driver identified in stop message; no issue with video adapters; no BIOS updates, etc.]
Technical information: *** STOP: 0x0000008E (0x0000005, 0x8058A5BC, 0xB94F2608, 0x00000000)

I'd certainly appreciate any suggestions. I have quite a few tests I'd like to run during the 14-day upgrade trial, but I'm dead in the water right now.

Seems to be working
After a full day lost in the tortured upgrade process, 4.0 seems to be working now. I did get a response from Parallels support. The suggested approach didn't work, but I tried a similar approach - simply double-clicking on a Time Machine copy of the 3.0 Windows .pst file VM.
It went though a conversion process, then found the Parallels Tools file and used the Wizard within XP to install the tools. That seemed to make all the difference in the world. Trying to install the tools outside of the XP system, sans the Wizard, seems highly failure prone.
Now that it's working, I have to say the 4.0 experience and speed far surpass 3.0. If the Parallels folks would improve the upgrade process, they'd be doing all involved a huge favor.
