How to restore Windows from Time Machine

Hi all,

I browsed the forum looking for an answer to this question, and found this thread. While it appeared helpful, I wasn't actually able to fix Windows using this method: ("3) If you're using the Time Machine method and you'd want to restore your VM file (e.g. 'Windows 7.pvm') from Time machine, then you'd invoke time machine, navigate to the folder where your VM file sits, use the "date" slider at the right to navigate to whatever date you want to restore your VM file from, right click on the file, and select "restore to Mac". ). Let me explain my issue.

Windows randomly went caput on me Sunday. I had been using Parallels, no problem, but the next day when I went back I got this screen:



I have tried restoring the VM from Time Machine, from a date I know Parallels was working, and it appears successful, but when I try to start Windows I get the same error. It seems to me Windows itself is somehow corrupted, but I thought a restore from TM would fix that. Apparently not. My questions are these:

1. Should I reload Windows from my install disc, thereby wiping all my applications and files, then try to restore from TM?
2. Will that even work?
3. Or should I try another method to restore from TM - maybe I'm just doing it wrong?

Please help! I am in the final throes - 2 days left! - of my graduate work and I really need to be able to use my Windows apps. Thank you!

Hello sprok9,

Please try to repair your Windows Operating System as suggested at : http://kb.parallels.com/5223

If it doesn't help, try to retrieve the Virtual Machine from time machine backup from the date in which your Windows Virtual Machine was working fine.

If the Virtual Machine retrieved from the time machine backup works, then you can remove the current Virtual Machine.

Thank you for your reply. I am trying to follow the instructions, but my Boot Camp Assistant menu does not appear to be the same as the instructions suggest. For example, I assumed I should be following this section: For VM that uses Boot Camp partition as a hard disk (Parallels Desktop for Mac only), but when I get to step 2, Choose to "Start Windows Installation", that is not an option. Here is a shot of what I see:

Also, in reference to your other suggestions, as I mentioned before I have already tried to retrieve (restore?) my VM from Time Machine, to no avail.
