How to Upgrade when older version will not run?

I have Parallels desktop version 6 installed on my Mac running Mountain Lion. It will not run.

The Parallels website has instructions for upgrading that begins with:

"Before upgrading to Parallels Desktop 7 we recommend complete the following instructions:
1. Launch your current version of Parallels Desktop and start Windows."

So how do I upgrade from version 6 to version 7 if it will not run?
