On a more serious note, what do you mean by "reports no Internet **but it does work**"? The more detail you can give us, the better responses we can give you.
Do you get similar connectivity problems with trying to browse using another browser, such as Firefox or Chrome? And if browsing does fail in a different browser, do you then also get weird memory errors when closing the browser?
What kind of results do you get when you open a terminal and type "ping www.google.com" (minus the quotes)? This is one quick-and-dirty connectivity test I run when my own networks are acting funny -- www.google.com does respond to pings, and failure to return could mean a DNS configuration error, complete lack of connection to the Internet, or some other problem.
Also try "ping 192.168.0.1" (I think this is the IP address of the host on the virtual network -- I'm not in front of my Mac now or I could be more certain). If pinging the host IP from the guest fails, then the virtual network itself is down.

Windows is an incredibly stupid OS.
Ask it to provide a system profile and it will tell you there's no Anti Virus evident even when there is. This has been a bug since its release.
When running in Parallels originally when the menu was placed at the top of the screen (Mac at the bottom) even though a user selected "top" and saved it, the next time you log in it was at the bottom. Microsoft wouldn't admit to this but after one of their updates it was fixed.
When you log in and look at the start menu on the extreme right are the little icons indicating speaker, anti-virus, among other things and the Network connection which has a yellow triangle on it. When clicked it tells you there's no internet connection. BUT.. when you go to IE it works. Connects to the web and all is fine.
These are just a small sampling of the issues with Windows. People will blather on about "Oh no it's not Windows" and how wonderful it is (and it is pretty) but it fact it is poorly written bloatware with multiple issues.
I could write a thesis on what it does wrong.

Yah, so helpful. On Unix-y systems, I may be completely baffled by the details of an error message, but at least it's a **starting point** to begin fixing things. Hiding detail ##IS NOT USEFUL##. Another favorite:
"Something else didn't work. Contact your system administrator."
Except I _AM_ the flipping system administrator! Blargh!

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled programming -- the default for network connections in Windows XP is to only show any icons in the Systray (that bit on the bottom right) when there is a problem. I *always* change that to *always* show network icons when connected. In Win XP, do that by clicking Start -> Settings -> Network Connections, then right-click each network connection listed, choose Properties, and click "Show icon in notification area when connected". The other option, "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity", should be toggled on by default.
Is there any possibility that you have more than one network adapter configured for the Windows VM, where one is working correctly (and not showing up in the systray), and the other isn't working right (and thus shows the yellow-triangle icon)?

I have them set to "always show" in Win7 too..
The Mac has the "default" adaptor and then the "Parallels" adaptor. Windows doesn't appear to see or like the Parallels adaptor but the default work Ok all round.
i'm a happy camper for now until the next time Windows screws up.
