Importing Windows XP from Virtual PC

I'm new on this forum.

I've read somewhere that Parallels Desktop 3 won't import Windows XP from the Virtual
PC 7 file although Parallels 2.5 Transporter does.

Could someone confirm this?

The real problem for me is that I intend to buy a French version of Parallels 3, but I can find nowhere a French version of Parallels 2.5. So I must know beforehand if I'll be able to import Windows XP from my Virtual PC file, directly with Parallels Transporter 3.

Otherwise I'll have to buy an American Parallels 3 version, since the American Parallels 2.5 version is still available on the Internet. (And there's no way I can upgrade an American 2.5 with a French 3.0.)

Parallels Transporter 3 can convert Virtual PC virtual hard disks to a Parallels virtual machine. You should just simply use your Virtual PC image.

What does "Virtual PC image" mean? Can't I import Windows XP straight from an external hard disk?

I'm afraid I'm a bit "thick", but I was never at ease with Virtual PC, and Parallels is totally new to me.
 
You will need to install Parallels Desktop on your Mac.
Than you will need to create a VM there and to install Windows XP on it.
After installation you should go 'File' -> 'Import'.
There you will need to choose 'From a Virtual Computer' and at certain point you will need to choose the Virtual PC image ou your HD.
Virtual PC image is a file that contains all the data on your VM. It must be a .vhd file.

Thanks, but this sounds more complicated than what I did with Parallels 2.5.

I'm trying to help a friend with Parallels 3.0, and it's really a case of the blind leading the blind!

I have Parallels 2.5 on my own computer. I didn't bother with installing Parallels Desktop first. I just launched the Transporter, and all I had to do was select the file, on my external hard disk, with Windows XP in it (it's called "Windows XP Professionnel.vpc7"); previously this file was on my old PowerBook G4, and I just burned it on an external hard disk. Once I had selected the right file for Transporter, it did everything: imported Windows XP, complete with user name and password, launched Parallels Desktop and completed installation; all I had to do was allow more RAM for Windows XP in Parallels Desktop.

Before this friend of mine buys Parallels 3.0, I'd like to be sure we can do exactly the same thing with Transporter 3. But from what you describe it's a bit more difficult? What I don't understand is where/how I create the .vhd file: on her old computer? On the iMac? What kind of software do I use to create a .vhd file?

Hello,

with the latest build of Parallels Desktop 3.x you can also run Transporter (File -> Import) and use your .vpc7 file as an image.

Hello All:

I imported two "Windows 2000 Pro" installs from my old Mac, where I have them under VirtualPC 7.0.3, to Parallels 3, build 5584. That went just fine, very easy and fast. Only problem: I don't get an Internet connection from within the Windows application ... e.g. starting a Web browser there does not establish a connection. Under VirtualPC the Mac Internet connection was used for Windows -- is this not the case under Parallels?

With Windows XP and Parallels 2.5, I can use the Internet connection, even though I use AirPort on my Mac (and I've read this can sometimes be a problem). So you should be able to do the same with Parallels 3, even though you're using Windows 2000. Have you checked the PC configuration?

please open 'Configuration Editor' of your VM ('Edit' -> 'Virtual Machine') -> 'Network Adapter' tab and select 'Shared Network' there. Will the problem persist?

Thanks. Problem ... there is no 'Network Adapter' tab. Here is what I see:
- Options
- Security
- Coherence
- Shared Folders
- Shared Applications
- Shared profile
- Video
- Memory
- Hard Disk 1
- CD/DVD-ROM 1

Note that the two Windows 2000 installs were created using the "Parallels Transporter" application.

Parallels Desktop 6 upgrade....

I purchased Parallels Desktop 5 for mac os and i was able to import the .vhd from virtual pc. Even I was able to import the .iso and related files. Recently, I upgraded to Parallels Desktop 6, and there was no option to import and migrate .vhd file? Can you please help us to address this issue.

When i wanted to import and migrate .vhd, i used to repeatly uninstall Destop 6 and install desktop 5, import and migrate and then upgrade to destop 6.

please help us to save our effort to uninstall and reinstall continously.
