Install programs not seeing external drives

I am running a late 2012 MacBook Pro retina edition, 16GB of ram, parallels 10 and windows 7 (NOT going to windows10). I have windows installed and running in full screen mode no issues to this point. I have some programs that I want to run in windows from an external hard drive. When I plug an external hard drive into the USB PORT windows sees it in my computer just fine, but when I run an install program like ms office for example the install program does not recognize the external as a potential installation drive. Am about out of ideas on how to fix this so am looking for help here

Please copy the setup files from your external drive to your Windows virtual machine and try to run the setup and see if it works!
 
Hello, please be informed that Parallels Desktop 10 Update 4 (10.4.0-29337) was released and the issue has been addressed. Please update Parallels Desktop to the latest build. Latest version always available here: http://www.parallels.com/directdownload/pd10/ Please note that Parallels Tools also needs to be updated (Actions > Update Parallels Tools) and let us know how it works.
