I installed Parallels and then decided to run the Transporter tool. I was surprised to see it create a 2nd VPN, but that works - it means I can get rid of my Windows machine while I gradually migrate applications across.

The Migrated VPN doesn't have sound - possibly because the computer I migrated from used a USB sound card. And it has some of the problems that old Windows systems have (dirty registry, etc).

But what it did do was make some applications reachable from OS-X. My wife had Parallels for a year and we never figured out how to do that.

Where's the documentation on how to:
1. Change whether "open with" uses programs from one or the other VPN.
2. Pull an icon out of the VPN so that when I open it, it opens up the VPN and runs.


(Am I the only one for which "Instant email notification" in this forum doesn't work?)

by VPN you probably mean VM - virtual machine.
When you use the Transporter it migrates a "clone" of your system so there is nothing surprising that you have the same registry, sound settings (which actually you can change manually) etc.
As for sharing applications, you can enable Shared Applications option so you can run Windows files with Macs programs and vice versa. Please, for more information check pages 169 and 209 of the User Guide.
But could you please specify your second point - do you want a shortcut for a Windows program to be located on the Mac desktop and, when pressed, to start Parallels VM and run?
 
I'd like that shortcut, and I would like to also control when I open a document whether it uses an application in OS-X, or which Windows VM. I clicked on a video and expected OS-X's VLC to run it, but the migrated Windows VM's VLC opened Windows to run it.

It is not obvious to me which application it was.

(I stll never get notified when someone replies to my message - despite my settings on this forum).
