Internet Connection.

Hey,

I installed Windows XP on my iMac after getting it for christmas, fairly pain free. :) Everything works except for I can't connect to the internet using IE. I'm currently using the 1940 build as i bought the disk off amazon. Would upgrading to a more recent version help. Any recommendations? I also have tried changing the network adapter to Host only networking, as well as bridged ethernet but that also didn't work.

Any suggestions I would be really grateful.

Yes upgrade to 1970 for sure.

Do you have a router that assigns dynamic IP addresses? If not the bridged ethernet may not work as it makes your winXP look like a second adapter in your Mac.

Shared networking should work and that is available under 1970.

The easily networking I've found for Parallels is to get a router (for your DSL or Cable) that has a DHCP server in it. Set your machines, including Parallels to get an address from this. They will then inherit the DNS servers, gateways, and everything.

Makes life simple.
 
Great i can't upgrade. :( The activation key I have cannot be used with the 1970 build :(. I'm using a DSL box btw with NTL.
 
Email Parallels. They actually have asked "box" users to update to 1970. Explain to them that your key doesn't work and they'll probably get ya setup with a new one.

So you have a DSL modem right? I'm not sure what NTL is... Is that a network provider?

Anyway DSL modems do not have DHCP servers in them. What I would suggest is the following:

Try to get networking going in 1970 when you can get a key. That should allow you to get connected at least.

I strongly however recommend using some form of router/firewall between your DSL modem and your computers. I have ComCast cable internet because it is all I can get short of satellite or wireless.

My firewall (hardware based - Sonicwall) gets bombed at least three times a day with various attacks. I wouldn't trust a software firewall as far as I could throw it.

So if you don't mind spening a little money, goto a circuit city or some other electronics store or by online and get like a LinkSys cable/DSL router. Most models will have a built in DHCP server and a small firewall. You can even get some of these that will double as a wireless access point.

No problem. Hope you can get it working. There have been poeple that have struggled with networking on Parallels and others like myself that it just works.

I'm just bored this morning. I guess I normally work so hard, having 3 weeks off and I don't know what to do with myself.
 
OK, I rattled off an email explaining the situation, not sure if it worked though i submitted the form and a blank layout appeared. I didn't get a failed message though so.. Hopefully i don't have to buy another key :/ which would suck. Haven't got a response yet but it's the holidays :P they deserve to take breaks :)
