Internet issues with parallels (Please respond problem found)

Okay, back at home i was running parallels off of a wireless router and it worked fine. Now, i get to school and i run the internet via ethernet cable. The problem is, the mac internet works fine, but the windows wont cooporate. I tried running command prompt and doing cmd and using ipconfig /renew after resetting it, but the operation times out and cannot get a valid IP address. What can i do? (see last post for problem).

Tell us:

- Parallels version

- Network config: shared/bridged

- If bridged, does the DHCP server offer more than one IP to a single system? Some do not.

- Can you ping external sites by IP from Windows but not by hostname? Test it on parllels.com at 66.197.23.53. If you can ping by IP but not by hostname your DNS name server config is broken.

i tried ping 66.197.23.53. and that just said server could not be reached 4 times and quit out.

You should upgrade your version of Parallels Desktop:

1) Run Parallels.
2) in Parallels menubar "Help" -> "Check for Updates..."

i could upgrade parallels, but will my same cd key still work? and will i have to reenter it? Also, will that fix the problem im having?

okay i went to my IT guy here at my university and he tried helping me. Apparently parallels does not support the option of Sharing the host's internet connection (NAT), and this is what i need to do in order to connect to the network inside parallels. Currently parallels is set on Connect directly to the physical network (bridged) and i need to change it to NAT. Now, if this is at all possible please let me know, but from what i was told parallels is not able to perform this change.

Any help is appreciated... thanks.

i use ethernet hard wired all the time without problems

just using the defaults

the VM has its own MAC number which you may need to register as a second machine well as the MAC number of the Macintosh

Your IT support will know where to look for the MAC number of a windows machine in the system info

Hmmm, I think your IT guy may be just a bit confused. I'm using Shared Networking (NAT).

When in Parallels use Devices\Networking\Shared...

You might also want to use the Search function on this forum to find posts related to "Shared Networking" or similar.

appreciate the help. Hugh, i dont think i have to do what you said because i tried what drval said and it worked. The problem was i had an old version of parallels. I even said to the dude, im running an old version i should try updating, he said no parallels doesnt support it. But since thats what you guys said, i tried it. I updated to the latest and got an error something about cant find the bridged network, so i searched that on this site and just uninstalled and loaded the build 3188 and the problem went away. Then i changed the networking to shared like drval said and pop it worked!

just want to say thank you for all the help, didnt want to have to reinstall windows on VMware fusion, cause personally parallels is much more aesthetically pleasing. Thanks, and see you when my next problem occurs (hopefully never).
