internet problem(s)

It's like this:

I'm living in China, I have broadband in my apartment - I just plug a network cord straight into the wall. My girlfriends computer running xp has no problem recognizing the connection. Then we run a program (windows only) to authenticate our connection - log in.

I installed Parallels to be able run this xp only program so I could get to the internet (this has been a long complicated ordeal). But when I plug the cord in Parallels doesn't register anything. So I can't run the program and connect...

How do I get Parallels to acknowledge the cord and connection?

I read another post which said that a 192. ... IP address was self referring (?) and couldn't be used to connect? Or some such? Does that make a difference?

Thank you Eru for your feedback. I have trying your suggestions and everything else I can think of for the past month and unfortunately still nothing is working. I have also followed the instructions you and Strell gave on http://forum.parallels.com/printthread.php?t=15466 but still no luck.

On the OS X side it's like this:

In the Network Status window:

-- Built-in Ethernet:
Light=Red
Message next to it: The cable for Built-in Ethernet is connected, but your computer does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the internet.

-- Ethernet Adaptor(en2)
* (I think this comes from Parallels because I never saw it before installation)
Light=Green
Msg: Ethernet Adaptor (en2) is currently active and has the IP address 10.37.129.2. You are connected to the internet via Ethenet Adaptor(en2)

-- Ethernet Adaptor(en3)
* also from Parallels I think. I can turn this off and it makes no difference.
Light=Green
Msg: Ethernet Adaptor(en3) is currently active and has the IP address of 10.211.55.2

In Windows XP:

When I start the VM with the plug goes in it automatically goes to

Device: Network Adapter 1
Mode: Realtek 8029(AS); Bridged Ethernet
Name: Default Adapter
Status: Connected

But the Windows XP tray icon for the network connection has a yellow exclamation point sign on it.

Opening it I get this:

General Tab:

Status: Limited or no connectivity
Duration: 35min (it's been open for a bit)
Speed 1.0Gbps

Activity:
Packets sent: 90
Received: 3

Support tab:
Limited or no connectivity.
... This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer.

When I click on the 'Repair' button it eventually gives me this window and message "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action could not be completed: Renewing your IP address. FOr assistance, contact the person who manages your network."

The problem with that is that they only speak Chinese and my Chinese is not that good.

But beyond that: my girlfriend has never had these problems with your computer (what I'm using right now to write and send this). We run a "Dr. Com" authentication program to log on but without that even installed her machine recognized the connection right away. And if you open a browser and type in an address it goes to the network's home page. (The network is apartment complex wide). The problem seems to me on my computer to be a failure of the XP to recognize the network connection at all.

I can switch in VM to en0: Ethernet Adapter;Shared Networking and nothing changes.
Going to Host-only tells me the Local Area COnnection is now connected, Speed 1.0Gbps (not what my girlfriend gets - she gets 100Mbps but there is no increase in the sending or receivng of packets. It's pretty much flatlined.

The VM also does not recognize my Wireless adaptor in the Control Panel networking section but when I switch to it it gives the same exact kind of response - limited of no connectivity, speed 1.0Gbs.

When I unplug the ethernet cable Mac notices but nothing changes in Windows.

Sorry for all the info but I'm a little desperate for help and trying to supply as much as I can so as to be as clear and hopefully relevant as possible.

In UK I use a router made in China SMART AX MT882 which contains my log on details and gets on to the WAN

the Mac is connected by an ethernet LAN and pure plug and play, the VM uses Network Adapter 1, Shared networking

if your girl firend's machine is WinXp you can ue that to share her connection

I am wary about buying a router though if I the VM doesn't even recognize this Ethernet connection (the one coming straight out of the wall).

If the connection and cord work are recognized no problem on my girlfriend's computer I worry that buying a router will just be more time and money sunk into this problem.

Thanks very much though and seeing as all this has been going on for months now I will probably end up buying a router if I can't get this working better in another week or two. This is all very frustrating.

in China the internet is very much state controlled
even Google have to accept limitations of blogs

so a higher security level must be enforced

WinXP ? Pro ? home can share a connection so may be you have to go via the girls machine

I'm not sure I'm afraid about PPoE vs. proprietary. When the program is opened for authentication we enter our username and password which I assume are unique and it logs into the network - we buy a new card every month. I think the program monitors our account in terms of payment since it says when we're close to running out and how many days and so forth. Getting that program installed was an epic problem but it runs smoothly on both machines (one real one virtual) now.

Since I've been here (a bit over a year now) Flickr has been blocked, wikipedia has occasionally worked - more and more recently but by no means every page every time, google video is completely blocked with no way i know to circumvent and blogspot blogs are still no go. In case you're interested.

So how do I get a connection from her computer?

that is a windows networking thing
go into the control panels, wizard and help menu

I rember there may also be a USB networking system you could use
beyond my own knowledge

Hey guys, thanks again for all the help.

Unfortunately I'm still not getting anywhere.

I have gone through the instructions on this page

to try to renew my IP address but it didn't work - couldn't connect to the DHCP server or something like that.

I want to get a wireless router for my gfs computer but I'm still nervous that I'm going to be sinking more money into this problem.

When I log onto Windows XP - Parallels Desktop I get this unwelcome message :::

"Problem with network adapter is detected. Please check if the network cable is connected to the physical network adapter attached to the virtual machine."

The cable is connected. What's the deal?

The other thing which bothers me especially in regards to buying a wireless router is this: Parallels does not seem to recognize my Airport at all. It doesn't show up in any of the windows anywhere. Again, I have no idea why.

Yeah, because your Wireless card is used by OS X, it will show up as the Ethernet Adapater on Parallels.

Do you have internet working to your Mac now?

If so, try and use Shared Networking and seeing if that works...
