Is it possible to have VMs with previous versions of OS X installed?

The question is simple: I'd like to have a few VMs to run software that isn't supported anymore on the latest version of OS X. A solution to run this would deb to buy 2nd hand hardware and install older versions of OS X on it. The perfect solution would be to run the older OS X versions in a VM. Is that at all possible?

Running previous versions of Mac OS X as a Virtual Machine on Parallels Desktop is possible. To know the supported guest OS on Parallels Desktop 11, visit this article.
 
So it is possible. The next question then is: if I have the various OS X Installers (OS X Lion.app, etc.) how do I get these installed on a VM? What steps should I take?
