Issues connecting to FTP Client

Hi Guys,

Please excuse my ignorance, I am new to Parallels and Mac. I have a mac book pro running parallels 5 with windows 7 prof x64 VM. We have a piece of software at work that is on every machine in the business and controls stock, invoices, purchase orders etc. The company that supplied the software don't support Mac installation at all (a little backward in my opinion) so I had to have a machine that runs windows, hence parallels. The problem i have is as follows:

Their software operates by using an FTP server to keep all the machines in the business across different sites up to date. each machine logs into the FTP server every couple of minutes. This is what they call "real time logging".

However when I try to connect the software to the FTP server i get the following message:

FTP error transferring test file. 200 Type set to I.
200 Port command successful.
425 Cannot open data connection.

I am being told that this is to do with the fact that the virtual machine is sharing an IP address with OSX, and that when the FTP server contacts the IP address, because it isn't specific to the virtual machine it isn't being received etc.

I have also been told that I need to set the virtual machines networking to "NAT".

I don't understand any of this to be honest, being new to it all however I am desperate to get my Mac to connect to the FTP Server so I can continue to use it for work.

I can't find any setting that I can change to NAT anywhere, and the company that provide the software are putting it down to a "Mac Issue" which they don't support.

Any help would be MASSIVELY appriciated.

Dear Simon,
please try to switch network mode in virtual machine from Shared networking to Bridged Networking. This can be done under Virtual Machine menu > Configure ... Hardware tab > Network Adapter and select Brided mode with Default Adapter or Ethernet. Click OK.
Let me know how it worked.

In addition to what I-Che have said (try to switch to the Bridged networking), I want to add that FTP can operate in two modes: Passive FTP and Acrive FTP. Parallels Shared Network supports only Passive FTP mode.

So, the solution is either switch the VM to Bridged Networking, or find an option in this software to switch FTP to passive-mode.

Thanks for your speedy reply and I am sorry it has taken so long to come back to you. I have applied the change that you suggested, changed to bridged and chose airport instead of default adapter and everything is working like a dream. Thank you so much for your help.
To Elric, thank you also for your information which has also been a great help. (I knew nothing about FTP etc before this). I had a network engineer have a little poke about with the FTP server with the log in details we were given by the provider and he informed me that the server is set up as both passive and active but the actual software is configured to log with active FTP. All of that said, as of yesterday afternoon the provider has confirmed that everything os working etc. so thank you to you both for your help. I hope you both and your families had a great christmas.
