Keep using old Win 7 VM after upgrading to Win 10?

If/when I succeed in upgrading my Windows 7 VM to Windows 10, can I use a copy of the non-upgraded Window 7 VM alongside the Windows 10 VM....or will the activation servers prevent it?

I give support to family using Windows 7 and need to be able to run it, but would like Windows 10 for myself.

@Mike Boreham, you may copy your Windows 7 VM (the .pvm file) and continue use it as a Windows 7, and the first VM you may upgrade to Windows 10
