Keeping old Parallels install disks

I have 6 Parallels install disks, I call that clutter. The first one is the only one that is not an update. If every disk I have, including pack ups magically got destroyed, do I need all 6 disks to reinstall Parallels, or can I throw sum of the disks away?
 
Hello GlennWW,

You might need the old disks only in case you need to install some of the outdated versions. If you install the latest one - you would not need the CDs for the previous versions. Just make sure you have all of your activation keys stored in a safe place/registered under your account.

What if you don't have your cd where you can find it & need to get updates? I just discovered that the little check for updates under the Help menu was lying to me & telling me I had the latest version of 5. But I have 9344 & I see the current ones are a lot higher #s & they say they fix a problems with new MacBookPros (2010) like I have. My mac keeps crashing & I've been told that windows or Parallels are messing up the mac side. The About Parallels says its an active copy licensed to me but I don't know why it won't update. the CD is somewhere but I haven't found it & need to get this fixed now.

I'm having terrible crashes with my Mac which I'm told are related to running windows on it. Discovered that the updates have a fix for new MacBookPros (2010) which mine is.

Safari has been crashing badly. Don't know if it will be stable enough to download this. That is the only browser on the mac side. I'm assuming to update it will want the program being updated closed, meaning I won't be able to use windows browsers like IE or Firefox. Or can I download it, move it to the mac side or something & then close Parallels & install?

Maybe Safari will work ok in the morning, but it sure hasn't been.

I also accidentally set up a 2nd vm when I was trying to just run Parallels the 1st time. So I have 2 VMs, both using Bootcamp as the virtual machine running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I figure I'm better off getting rid of 1 but not sure how to safely do so.

pasted in the link but it just brought up the download center for the current products for sale apparenty--no Parallels 5 to get me up to the current build.

You can download and install anytime Opera, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome web browsers for Mac and try using them.

Sure, you can download Parallels Desktop update on Windows side, and if you have no Shared Folders or Shared profile enabled, then just drag and drop it to Mac Desktop. Or simply save it to Shared Folders if you have it enabled.

You can easily delete the VM you are not using if you right-click VM instance in Virtual Machines List and select 'Remove' then.
 
OK, found the link, the one given didn't have 5 but found a link to that in a sticky on another area. They sent me the link to download it then & I just got done downloading it.

I see it has install, getting started & uninstall. So I guess I'll 1st take a look at the getting started.

I guess it would be good to run a back up of bootcamp before doing this--just in case. So I'll have to set that up. Microsoft told me that there is back up software in Windows 7 that I can use to make a mirror image of it. I can set that up to back up to my old ntfs drive. I guess it would also be good to let Time macine back up as well (I don't keep it plugged in all the time as that HD wants to be plugged into 1 of my 2 usb ports. my old external mouse I plug in to the other (its likely usb1 which would slow my usb2 hub down to usb1 so can't plug it in to that.) So I'll run back ups in the morning.

Then I guess I'll follow the instructions to delete the unused VM. I'm assuming it should be identical to the 1 I'm using since both use bootcamp as the virtual machine.

Then I just click to install & will it replace the existing version, or do I have to uninstall the old one or what? or maybe the getting started will tell me.

Am I right on the steps I should take? Anything else I should know before going ahead?

I'm optimistic that this will help with the crashing issues, after seeing the build notes that said it fixed some kind of incompatibility with the new MacBookPros (2010) which is what I have. I'm a bit angry though that the regular check for updates didn't do what I would expect from any other software--check for updates & accurately find & offer to download them. This has said I already had the latest updates which was far from the truth. Doing a normal update--like most programs--even Windows--do would have been a whole lot simpler & might have saved me from all those crashes & the hours I've spent so far with tech support & forums trying to get answers & get it working.

Danil, when you say "make sure you have all of your activation keys", do you mean the series from day one or just for the versions I may want to re-install?

You would not probably need the keys for the very first versions (2.x and 3.0), however having the keys for the latest versions (you may want to reinstall) handy would be good.
 
where do you get key? & is it needed for update install?

I found my original CD but didn't find the sleeve it came in so no #. Will I need that to install the later build for Parallels 5?

Try checking the manual. That removes it from the list. I finally did find it in the manual. The VM has to be open to do it p 199 in the Parallels 5 manual.

I'll see about doing that in the morning or afternoon when I'm more awake--less likely to make mistakes then.
