LAN Setting Compatibility

Hi,


I'm using the OS 10.6.1 system and I installed parallel 4.0 to run windows xp in my computer.

I am trying to play Warcraft 3 via LAN on my XP with another friend who is also using Parallels Desktop 4.0. Currently, the game is installed on my XP virtual machine. Kindly advise me on how I should go about setting up the LAN on my XP (and if necessary, on my Mac OS).

I have come across a post about using Bridged Networking rather than Shared, but I am clueless as to what I'm supposed to do.

Any ideas?

First, switch to the Bridged Networking for VMs. To do it, either
- open VM configuration -> Network Card and select "Bridged" to default adapter
or
- Click on network icon on the bottom-right icon and select bridged

then wait approximately 10 seconds and try to open some internet site (e.g. www.apple.com).

If site opens successfuly and you are in the same LAN (there are no routers between you and your friend's Mac), then after switching the other VM to Bridged all should work

Hi,

I've tried what you've suggested. However, there still seems to be a problem: I have switched both laptops' to Bridged Networking (Default Adapter); after ~10 seconds, I tried opening a website on both laptops (parallels.com) and the page loads as per usual; after a few moments, my internet connection becomes disconnected and I have to log into my account once again (when it disconnects, I am unable to detect or access the LAN game created by my friend).

I would then log into my account again and attempt the LAN setup, but the internet connection would disconnect again.

FYI, I must log into my account before I can surf the internet (which makes the whole process a lot more troublesome). The same goes for my friend, since we're subscribed to the same internet service.

Where might the problem be?

Ok, so bridged won't work. You can try to configure port-forwarding for SharedNetworking. To do this, switch the VM to SharedNetworking mode. Wait some time. Execute inside Windows the cmd.exe and execute in cmd.exe the command "ipconfig" (without quotes). Write down the VM's ip-address.

Then open the menu "Parallels Desktop" -> "Preferences" -> Networking and add forwarding rules for both TCP and UDP for ports 6112-6119 (i.e all this ports - 6112,6113...6119). I.e.

TCP: incoming port 6112, IP-Address = your VM's ip-address, Destination port 6112

the same for UDP and the same for all other ports to 6119

Just want to clarify. I have to repeat the procedure on both computers, is that right?

And regarding the Parallels Desktop Documentation on "Principles of Working with Parallels Desktop" (Network Preferences), there is mention of the following (as quoted from the documentation):

"When the rule is added, use the following IP address combination for external connections to your virtual machine: <you Mac's IP address>:<Source port>".

Do I need to carry this out? (I am unsure of its meaning)
