Looking for help with Parallels xp Network connection issues

Hi everybody,

first I'll say that I am sure the answer to my question is probably already to be found somewhere within the pages of this forum site. But, despite reading plenty of threads about network connection issues, I feel more confused than ever. If anyone could help me with this I would be extremely grateful.

I have an Intel Mac, with Parallels Desktop v. 1848?. I successfully installed Windows Xp Pro on to my VM, it's up and running, and I haven't done anything else to it, except to install Parallels Tools.
But when, in the set-up, the connection Wizard asked me what ISP I would be connecting to, I was too lazy to look up my Mac's IP address, etc, and just prompted the wizard to "automatically" find it.

Now, in XP's control panel, it says the connection is unsuccessful.

Here are the settings I have currently:
I hook up to the internet through cable modem, through the ethernet hook-up, not airport.
I have Firewall on, and File Sharing on.
In Parallels configuration I have Network Adapter Options set to "enabled", and "connect cable at startup". I have set the emulation configuration at "bridged ethernet, default adapter".
People write about host-only, but even when on my iMac, when I came across the whole sharing issues, I had no idea what it was about.

So, I just don't know if the issue is within XP, within Parallels set-up configuration, or has something to do with my iMac's system pref's for internet sharing and firewalls, and such.

btw, the IP address listed in the XP's connection details is different from the IP address of my iMac. Does that matter?

Thanks for the help, everybody. Going through the whole Parallels installation process I know is worth every penny and every minute, but so far I have found out how plain clueless I can be!

first of all.. go to the Parallels download page and get the latest build (1940).
From your description, it doesnt look like you are using a router ?

Your parallels install will more than likely, not work in Bridged Networking mode as your ISP probably only gives you one IP address to your cable connection. I would bet that XP ends up with a 169.x.x.x address ? You should setup "Host Only Networking" and then use Connection Sharing in the MacOSX SysPrefs to connect to the outside world.

How to turn on Internet Sharing

1. Open “System Preferences†and click “Sharing†in “Internet & Network†section
2. Select “Ethernet Adaptor (en2)†from “To computers using†list. Note that System Preferences shows Parallels Host-Guest Adapter as “Ethernet Adaptor (en2)†in this case.
3. Select the adapter you want sharing from in “Share your connection from†dropdown
4. Click “Start†button and confirm staring the service

These directions are often quoted in these forums, but appear to not be the whole story. When I turn on sharing I get a message on the Mac that I have to turn on Personal Web Sharing in services as well. I do this, even though Apple documentation says that is to run a webserver on the Mac. Then once I go into the VM, browsing the web seems to be the only internet connection that goes out. Email doesn't work, nor does SSH. I suspect the issues is with the Mac, since this is the same results I get when trying to use internet sharing between 2 Macs.

I'm going to post to Apple discussion forums as well, since there sems to be some info missing or wrong.

I've tried sharing on my MBP with Ubuntu, and on a iMac sharing to another Mac and in both cases, prefs pops up a warning about other settings interfering and there is a yellow exclamation point with a warning at the bottom of the pref pane. Do you have the Mac firewall turned on?

I don't know if my iMac has a router or not, actually.
So, two things:
1.) in the "sharing" pane, ethernet adaptor (en3) is listed, not (en2). Should I be concerned about that? And should I click that from the drop-down, or click on "bridged ethernet"?
2.) If/when I check the box for ethernet adaptor (en3), and click start, the warning says that if I am "connected to a network, turning on internet sharing may affect the network settings of other computers and disrupt the network."

I don't think I'm on a "network", just thought I was connected with Comcast and the internet. But I have learned there is quite a bit more I don't know about my iMac!
Should I disregard that and go ahead with the settings as you described them , Darkone?

Alright, that worked just fine.
I went ahead with internet sharing from ethernet adaptor (en3), figuring it was more or less the same as (en2) --same function, that is.
I, like you Davide, also had to try "Personal Web Sharing" feature in the "services" pane of "sharing" in System Preferences.
As a test, I disabled it on my iMac while XP was running in the other window. Then, When trying to access hotmail, it was rejected, then worked fine after I re-enabled this sharing feature.

Darkone, sounds like you may have a different/ better set-up than we do, not having to turn web sharing on. Either way, as long as it's working for me, and I'm not sharing all my private bank account, etc, info. with the world, I'm happy. Slower than a slug, though. Think it's time I increased my RAM.

See my post below (above?). The Mac firewall seems to be the culprit. I created a new FW rule and allow the ports I needed to use. Now host-only with internet sharing is working. If some app doesn't work on the VM, just check the logs on the host to see what port needed opening.
