mac os *always* crashes when starting vm

hello,
i am a somewhat new user on macs and on the parallel software so i could be missing something obvious here, but every time I have clicked on the play icon, my computer crashes. I set up the basic winxp vm, inserted the windows install disc, and even played around with cd-rom options to make sure it was picking up the os. every time i have tried it (around 10) i have gotten this message my screen goes grey and requests me to restart. I'm not sure what to do.

My basic idea is that the CPU is panicking because something is wrong with the architecture, does it have something to do w/ the fact that I have one of the new core-duos?

Do you have a Core 2 Duo or a Core Duo? Firstly, if you've had your Mac for a while I'd check for updates to the Firmware and OS X. The current OS X version is 10.4.8.

You could always re-install OS X and see what happens. Maybe do a check on your drive in Disk Utility.

Let us know what your system specs are, and connected hardware, etc.

That has been a common problem on core 2 duo machines using Parallels builds prior to 1970. Make sure you are up to date. You can download the latest release via the download option at the top of this page.

Parallels Power On Crashes computer

I am trying to setup a MACBook with Parallels. After transferring the user’s account (using the migration assistant) from an Ibook G4, Parallels and Windows XP was installed and worked great--then I got clever.

I tried to set up the user’s Mail app POP account to keeping a copy on the server instead download the files to the local drive. I also, tried to move the local files from the local drive back to the server. I found out one cannot do this using a POP account. I then created an IMAP account in Entourage and tried to move the local files back to the server. It appeared to work BUT the indexing got screwed up.

I deleted the user’s account on the MACBOOK. Again with the migration assistant, transferred user’s account from the Ibook to the MACBOOK. This worked. As soon as the Parallels “power on†(“blue†greater than sign) is pressed starting up the VM, a kernel error occurs, the computer crashes requiring a hard reboot. I deleted the Parallels folders under users/[username]/ library/parallels/winxp/winxp.pvs and tried again getting the same results.

The user just called and said that under Finder she is seeing two Backup from “Old Mac†folders (from OldMac and from OldMac(2)). Also, we also saw her username listed twice under a deleted users folder (lhersrud and lhersrud1). I put the users folders in the trash but did not remove Deleted Users folder.

So.. now what should I do? Re-format and start over? I don’t have a MAC 10.4. installation disc to use.
